Intel CentrinoPro for the Proest of IT Pros

June 20th, 2007 by admin

Pulling together this story we got to meet a lot of interesting pros working in the IT industry. Guys like Josh Hilliker, Big Dave and others inside Intel seem pretty fired up about new tools for IT pros. They say the aim is "zero touch" but there are many steps to take with the help from companies using new manageability technology and IT pros worldwide who will test drive new capabilities and help Intel build new needs into next generations of vPro Processor Technology for business servers, desktops and now laptops (built with Intel Centrino Pro).

Josh also talked to us about how IT pros are using social media just like others -- watch for short video clip of Josh talking on this topic.  In fact, this may be one of the real pioneering communities out there using Wikis, blogs and collaborative online tools.  I'm going to try and tap in and learn more about the IT community starting from the people featured in this video.

Tech Capitals of the World: Top Ten Digital Cities

June 20th, 2007 by admin

The Melbourne Age has compiled an interesting Top Ten Digital Cities List, and 6 of the 'tech capitals' of the world are in Asia.

The top 10 digital cities are ranked according to the following criteria: Broadband speed, cost and availability; Wireless internet access; Technology adoption; Government support for technology; Education and technology culture and Future potential. Arjun Ramachandran writes:

Asian cities scored well on broadband speed and availability, mainly because they have concentrated populations in a small land area. Seoul's excellent wireless coverage, along with government programs such as Seoul Digital City, gave the city top billing.

Stockholm, San Francisco and Silicon Valley lack the affordability of fast broadband in Asian cities but enjoy high levels of education and a culture in favour of technology. In New York, a leading financial hub, access to wireless hotspots is also exceedingly good.

Tallinn and Beijing are cities to watch. Tallinn's government already leads the way in e-government, while Beijing continues to roll out technology through the city ahead of the Beijing Olympics.

Upon completion, New Songdo will likely be the ultimate digital city. Even as a work in progress, it makes the list.

TOP 10 DIGITAL CITIES

ben-digital-divide.jpg1. Seoul, Korea

2. Singapore

3. Tokyo, Japan

4. Hong Kong

5. Stockholm, Sweden

6. San Francisco and Silicon Valley, USA

7. Tallinn, Estonia

8. New York, USA

9. Beijing, China

10. New Songdo City

New Songdo City?, I hear you ask. As well you might -- New Songdo City is a $31 billion city-in-the-making 60 km south of Seoul. Due for completion in 2010, it is an ambitious development on 600 hectares of reclaimed land that will be one of the world's first cities in which all information systems are linked. One wonders: where do the Luddites go?

Applying for a job - advice 2

June 20th, 2007 by admin

Applying for a freelance or permanent web designer role?

A client recently placed an advertisement requesting a Junior Web Designer. We got over a thousand CV's. There is no way anyone is going to go through a thousand CV's.

Some simple rules that people use to weed out applicants who are probably not worth pursuing. If you want to just go straight through to our jobs visit us at www.wasro.com
Here are a few vital tips.

1. Email address:
Make sure your email address contains your name. This is very easy. If you're using Gmail or Outlook you can easily enter your full name in the Options sections.

Why?
This is the first point of contact. It looks unprofessional and if you've got any technical expertise you should be able to set up your email application. And as a web designer you should definitely be able to configure this.

2a. Use good English
Using sentences like:
Having seen details of vacancy Junior web designer
• im looking 4 ajob:)

are not good English and will automatically get you deleted from a recruiter's Inbox.

2b. Use positive copy
Don't say "Unfortunately couldn't get any chance to work professionally after that.".
One, the grammar is poor and, more importantly, it doesn't create the right impression and is a sure-fire way to get your email dumped without any further consideration

3. Read the advert
If the advert says "Only apply if you are able to work in London" then do NOT apply if you're from India, Romania, Russia or are an out-sourcing company

If the job asks for a Web Designer then odds on they want someone creative as well as technically proficient. So if you put programming experience in your CV make sure you balance it out with plenty of good quality design samples.

4. Put a link to your website in the body of your email text

And make sure that your portfolio is up to date and has at least three great sites you've personally worked on.
Any fewer and people will think you don't have any experience.
If you have more then make sure there rest are up to the same standard as your top three. You don't want to run the risk of making the recruiter worry about your skill sets.

Don't say "My portfolio is 600MB on a CD and so I can't put it on the web"! You're going for a Web design job. You should be able to think up a creative way of showing some of your Web Design experience on the web!

5. Irrelevant experience
OK, you've got a few years where you weren't doing anything productive. So what, we all have. But just don't mention it.
For example, if you have this on your portfolio:
1996-2002 Hairdressing jobs
it does not look good in any shape or form.

Better would be to restrict your past experience to the last five years where you do have relevant experience.

Here's another entry we sometimes see:
Microsoft Certification
Is there a Microsoft Certification for Design and Creativity? I don't think so. Don't make it a feature if you're just going for a Design related job.

6. How should you do it?
OK, after knocking numerous ways of phrasing your application, here are some positive approaches to a covering note, letter or email. One example might go:

"To whom it may concern,

Having seen details of a position for a Junior Web Designer, I would like to apply for this position.

I am a recent graduate who would like to develop a strong portfolio of commercial work. I have a great eye for detail and I am passionate about the creative work I do. I thrive in a busy environment and am able to juggle several jobs at the same time. As a team player with a positive attitude, I am organized, and able to work to tight deadlines whilst maintaining a high degree of accuracy, initiative and enthusiasm. I am always up for a challenge and eager to learn as much as I can in the industry. I’m a very fast learner and have no problem communicating on a commercial level.

This is the link to my website: http://your.website.here

Thank you for your time,
Your name here
"

Having said that, please don't just copy and paste. After all this is a web designer job. It's supposed to be creative and if you just use the same text you're certainly not demonstrating it!

Cyberwarfare

June 20th, 2007 by admin

Last month the Economist ran an article entitled Cyberwarfare: Newly nasty.

They describe the recent anonymous internet attack against Estonia which crippled the websites of many of its central services, including banks, newspapers, ministries and broadcasters. For a while even the emergency numbers for calling an ambulance or a fireman were out of action. This attack was much more devastating than any previous form of cyberwarfare, and it had a degree of sophistication also previously unseen.

There is a great array of exotic terms for the methods used: Particular ports in mission-critical computers were attacked. Packet bombs, DDOS (distributed denial of service) attacks, and botnets were all part of the cyberaggression. (Some of these may warrent an item of their own on this blog.)

The already overused "cyber" prefix has spawned a few more (that are new to me) in this article, some with hyphens and some without: cybersecurity czar, cyber-attackers, cyberdefences, and the one I like best, cybergangsterdom.

One method of defence in this kind of war is the "mirroring" (i.e. copying) of content across a number of servers so that it is necessary for the cyber-attackers to simultaneously attack on a number of fronts. Little though I know about war that sounds like a rather familiar concept. (Maybe this blog will return to the concept of "mirroring" too one day.)

Dave Dittrich, an expert on Cybersecurity from the University of Washington, has an item on Cyberwafare which includes a glossary of Information Warfare Terms.

ETYM

Cyber - an overused prefix that I already referred to in my item on Cyburbia.

Warfare - (From yourdictionary.com) [Middle English : warre, war; see war + fare, journey (from Old English faru, from faran, to journey; see fare).]

The Accounting SaaS space is getting busier…

June 20th, 2007 by admin

Lance Wiggs posted about a SaaS accounting service he found in the states - Lance's post can be seen here.

I always said that I had concerns about the revenue expectations articulated in the Xero IPO and whether or not the product constitutes a sufficiently unique selling proposition to gain significant uptake.

While I love Xero and want to see it succeed, as an SME owner who runs the accounting for half a dozen or so enterprises with a currently deployed MYOB solution, I need a compelling reason to change. A robust open source (free!) solution would be compelling but $100 per month with limited functionality (and yes I understand that this will change with Xero development) is not sufficiently compelling.

The other issue is that MYOB will IMHO have a SaaS product ready to role very very soon. Incumbents advantage????

SAS (Sistem Administrasi Sekolah) Online

June 20th, 2007 by admin

Btw semuanya bisa saya maklumi, soalnya kita semua masih sama-sama belajar, sebenarnya sih saya mendukung sepenuhnya demi kemajuan IT di dunia pendidikan. jangan sampai IT dianggap merepotkan pekerjaan, tetapi IT bisa membantu pekerjaan. MAJU TERUS IT PENDIDIKAN!!!!!

Aufschub

June 20th, 2007 by admin
