While Ultra Recall can do much more than just managing a journal, it is very good at the task, which this sample highlights. The sample demonstrates using templates and other Ultra Recall features, and contains a pre-configured journal hierarchy. A flash tutorial about managing a journal in Ultra Recall is also available here.

The Journal.urd sample shows one method of creating a journal hierarchy in Ultra Recall, but you are certainly not constrained to this design, the flexibility of Ultra Recall allows limitless configurations. The sample uses three custom templates (Year, Month, and Journal Entry), which makes it very simple to add Journal Entries which are organized by Year and Month, yet be fully searchable. Custom icons were assigned to the different templates which further highlights the different parts of the journal.

    Our applications are written primarily in Visual C++. We started with Visual C++ 6.0 back in 1998 and used it successfully for many years.

    VC7

    There was quite a bit of disappointment among C++ developers with the release of Visual Studio .NET (VC7) in 2002 and VS .NET 2003 (VC7.1) the following year because of so much emphasis placed on the new .NET Framework and VB.NET and C# languages. But with some trepidation and a moderate amount of pain, we finally migrated to VC7.1 in mid-2005. Other than some quirks in the resource editor that we managed to work around, that version worked well for us (with the requisite additions of Visual Assist and Fast Solution Build add-ins). It brought much-needed improvements to standards compliance, some library improvements, and was fairly stable, although compilation was a little slower and the executables slightly larger than VC6.

    VC8

    In early 2007, we experimented with upgrading to Visual Studio 2005 (VC8) but ran into a lot of problems attempting to get everything to compile and link properly. Microsoft also made some changes to how LIB files are handled, and one third-party library we use did not offer a VC8-compatible library at the time, so we shelved the conversion.

    With Microsoft readying the release of Visual Studio 2008 (VC9) and the availability of VC8-compatible third-party libraries, we decided it was time to attempt migrating one more time. We thought it would be easier to convert to VC8 first and then try VC9 after that, but boy did that turn out to be a poor assumption.

    VC8 didn’t do a great job of converting our project and solution files, requiring manual correction (Build checkboxes in the Configuration Manager and dependencies getting dropped). We also ran into several compilation and linker issues to work through, including:

  • Several code changes were required to eliminate warning messages related to using the new safe CRT functions calls, etc.
  • Had to increase the compiler limits (/Zm) on some projects
  • Warning for non-standard extension used in qualified name for enums
  • Disabled manifest generation and embedding (since our executables already include a manifest)

    Thanks to Visual Build’s built-in support for all Visual Studio releases, updating our builds was painless (only needing to append ‘|Win32′ to the solution configuration names).

    Once we finally got everything to compile and link, we ran into several runtime problems and had to make some more changes, primarily:

  • Avoid referencing &elem[0] of empty vectors (it’s safe to pass that to memcpy with a length of 0, for instance, but VC8 aborts the program just by referencing the element)
  • Make changes to bring STL iterator code (which assumes they are pointers) into compliance

    Most problems were identified quickly and corrected in the debug build, but even with these changes, we ran into two show-stoppers:

  • Choosing one feature in one of our applications resulted in the app just disappearing, and this only occurred in the release build on a Windows 2000 box.
  • Command-line builds worked fine, but compiling almost any file in any project within the Visual Studio IDE resulted in the dreaded internal compiler error (ICE), which made development and debugging unbearable.

    VC9

    We were about to give up and stick with VC7.1, but as a last-ditch effort, we decided to try migrating everything to VC9. We encountered a few more compilation issues:

  • Some of our projects defined a minimum Windows version of NT 4 (_WIN32_WINNT 0×0400), which now resulted in compile errors, but changing this to Windows 2000 (0×0500) fixed that and is safe since our applications require Windows 2000 anyway
  • The 64-bit portability check compiler flag is deprecated so we removed that directive from the project files
  • MFC no longer handles including of afximpl.h very nicely, so we just copied the few lines of code we used from that file into our own sources and removed the include

    After these changes, low and behold, we found that everything worked just great! No more crashing of the compiler when building in the IDE, and no more problems running our application on Windows 2000. Our executables are larger still (about 10%), which is acceptable considering all the improvements that have been added to make the code more secure in our connected world.

    It’s apparent that Microsoft has really put significant effort into improving their C++ tool chain with this release of Visual Studio, and there are many great IDE improvements as well:

  • The debugger, especially peering into STL containers, has improved tremendously
  • The resource editor is improved and now handles high color bitmaps
  • VS/MSBuild now supports parallel builds on multi-core and multi-CPU systems (and builds do appear to be noticeably faster on such systems)
  • New features like testing, optimization, code snippets, and property manager capabilities
  • Easy backup, restore, and sharing of IDE settings

    One caveat that bit us: Visual Studio 2008 requires Windows XP or later, and our build boxes were all Windows 2000, so we had to reconstruct the build machines. There is also a quirk with the Visual Studio 2008 Standard edition installer — it doesn’t install cl.exe and some ancillary files unless you perform a full installation.

    Overall, it took longer than expected to complete the migration, but fortunately it turned out to be worthwhile in the end.

    Langkah Instalasi FreeBSD 4 

    --Panduan Singkat

    Tulisan ini merupakan sebuah prosedur ringkas cara menginstalasi FreeBSD. Tetapi disini ditambahkan fungsi portupgrade -ai (mengganti semua port, dengan konfirmasi), yang memerlukan beberapa konfigurasi lokal dalam  file pkgtools.conf. Tujuan uraian ini adalah memakai cvsup.sh && build-world-kernel.sh, dan terbangunnnya sistem yang dapat memberitahu anda apa yang harus dikerjakan kemudian agar instalasi lengkap dengan sedikit usaha. Bagi pemula, sebaiknya pada waktu praktek mengikuti langkah langkah berikut didampingi rekan yang telah terbiasa dengan instalasi FreeBSD. Penjelasan tentang perintah dalam FreeBSD silahkan lihat FreeBSD Handbook. Setelah anda sukses melakukan instalasi FreeBSD, gantilah kernel anda, dan instalasi beberapa port-nya.

    Anda perlu perhatikan perintah instant-server dan instant-workstation meta-ports, yang menyatukan layanan yang diperlukan dan aplikasi dekstop. Terutama jika anda mengetik

    cd /usr/ports/misc/instant-workstation && make

    sistem anda akan menginstalasi berbagai macam software yang bermanfaat secara otomatis.

    Dalam uraian ini tidak dijelaskan bagaimana mengubah script yang ada, anda mungkin harus memutuskan mengedit script dalam sistem anda nantinya dan disesuaikan dengan data teknis jaringan komputer anda. Pengeditan script bisa dilakukan dengan mengetik perintah vi namafilenya, setelah muncul filenya barulah anda edit atau isi dengan data teknis jaringan anda seperti nama host, IP address, netmask dll.

    Catatan: Perintah $myself dan $hostname, yang dipakai dibawah ini tidak ditujukan sebagai variabel shell sebenarnya. Ketika anda melihat mereka, langsung masukan saja data yang sesuai dengan jaringan komputer anda. Postfix akan memakai variable yang ada didalam file main.cf, ingat --  nama variabel dalam posfix (tidak ditulis italic) dan dapat diakses langsung, jadi Postfix dapat melakukan substitusi variabel secara sendiri.

    Catatan: File file yang dipakai dalam prosedur ini ditujukan untuk pemakaian umum, dan meliputi berbagai saran. Namun ini belum tentu sesuai atau optimal bagi kebutuhan sistem anda. Akan tetapi cara berikut ini dapat merupakan awal yang baik bagi instalasi sistem anda. Disarankan untuk mendownload file resource bari uraian ini dari  http://www.reppep.com/~pepper/freebsd/install/reppep.tgz, kemudian lihat dan sesuaikan dengan kebutuhan anda lalu copikan ke  direktori /root/reppep untuk melanjutkan prosedur berikut nya.

    Dasar Instalasi (sysinstall)

    1. Instalasi semua file distribusinya ("Semua source sistem, binari dan sistem  X Window").
    2. Instalasi koleksi port.
    3. Konfigurasi network.
    4. Tambahkan :

      • ispell
      • kde
      • mozilla-gtk
      • portupgrade
      • rsync
      • samba
      • screen
      • sudo
    5. Catatan: Jika anda ingin setiap user mempunyai group personal-nya (seperti yang ada pada Linux & Panther), buatlah group group baru pertama kali pada saat melakukan sysinstall. pastikan setiap langkah pembuatan account user, tiap user mempunyai group 0 (wheel) member-- sebab dengan cara su akan mengalami kurang cocok.

    Setup Dasar dan Account

    1. Serial console dibuat enable dengan mengetikan : echo "-hD" > /boot.config tekan enter.
    2. Bila anda tidak melakukan itu pada terminal serial didalam sysinstall, lakukan sekarang dengan cara mengetikan : echo 'ttyd0 "/usr/libexec/getty std.9600" dialup on secure' >> /etc/ttys lalu tekan enter.
    3. Ketikan: visudo # uncomment full access for %wheel lalu tekan enter.
    4. Ketikan: cd /root && ftp http://www.reppep.com/~pepper/freebsd/install/reppep.tgz && tar xzf reppep.tgz && ls -lt reppep      kemudian anda tekan tombol enter,  ambilah file file tambahan yang disarankan berikut patch-nya, dan bukalah pada untuk direktori /root/reppep -- bila anda punya patch local, buka jugalah file file itu untuk patch lokal anda.
    5. Jika anda punya pacth lokal, bukalah file file itu dengan cara mengetikan. tar xzf local.tgz && ls -lt reppep tekan enter.
    6. Ketikan: patch /etc/ssh/sshd_config /root/reppep/sshd_config.diff tekan enter.
    7. Instalasilah file kernel anda dan tetapkan konfigurasinya dalam direktori /usr/src/sys/i386/conf.
    8. Ketikan: cd /etc && cp /root/reppep/make.conf . && cat /root/reppep/rc.conf* >> rc.conf && vi resolv.conf rc.conf make.conf && egrep -v '(^$|^#)' rc.conf | sort | more # tuliskan semua konfigurasi jaringan komputer anda pada file rc.conf.local; pastikan tidak ada variabel yang anda tuliskan dua kali didalam file rc.conf. 
    9. Ketikan: mkdir -p /home/ports/distfiles && cd /usr/ports && rmdir distfiles && ln -s /home/ports/distfiles # preserves ports across rebuilds
    10. Ketikan:  mkdir -p /usr/sup && cp /root/reppep/cvsupfile /root/reppep/periodic.conf /root/reppep/ntp.conf /etc && cp /root/reppep/refuse /usr/sup && vi /etc/cvsupfile /etc/ntp.conf /usr/sup/refuse
    11. Ketikan: mkdir -p ~root/bin ~root/log
    12. Ketikan: cd /root/reppep && cp build-world-kernel.sh cvsup.sh /root/bin && chmod u+x /root/bin/*.sh && rehash
    13. Ketikan: patch /usr/local/etc/pkgtools.conf /root/reppep/pkgtools.conf.diff

    Mengubah Source, Kernel dan World (dengan tipe terbaru, lakukan secara periodik)

    Catatan: Rekomendasi dari FreeBSD ada di http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/makeworld.html, walau agak susah tetapi secara teori cukup aman. Jika anda masih kurang jelas dg apa yang anda lakukan disini ataupun dengan mengikuti langkah dari situs tadi, bacalah prosedur yang tertulis didalam Handbook FreeBSD.

    Peringatan: Langkah ini muda merusak sistem anda, atau mengunci anda sendiri, ketika melakukan perubahan kernel atau world. pastikan anda memiliki akses console (PS/2-style atau serial) sebelum melakukan perubahan.

    1. cvsup.sh # mengubah dasar FreeBSD  yaitu source (kernel & world), dan pohon port; tidak akan berpengaruh terhadap port yang telah terinstall
    2. cd /usr/src && mergemaster -p # mergemaster akan membutuhkan banyak waktu, sehinga akan lebih b aik melakukannya sebelum sistem down.
    3. build-world-kernel.sh
    4. make installkernel
    5. shutdown -r now
    6. Pembuatan kernel baru.
    7. shutdown now # single-user
    8. cd /usr/src && make installworld
    9. mergemaster
    10. shutdown -r now
    11. Editlah tiap file konfigurasi  tambahan ang ada dalam direktori /etc or /usr/local/etc.
    12. Ujilah sambungan komputer anda ke jaringan dan firewal-nya (mungkin memakai perintah ipfw list).

    Catatan: Jika anda memakai bagian ini sebagai panduan dalam pengubahan sistem yang sedang beroperasi, dan bukan sistem yang baru anda buat, jangan lupa lakukan perintah portupgrade -ai pada saat kernel & world yang baru anda buat sudah selesai dikerjakan..

    Mengkonfigurasi BIND

    1. cd /etc/namedb && sh make-localhost && mv named.root named.root.old && dig @m.root-servers.net. ns . > named.root && vi named.conf && grep named /etc/rc.conf # konfigurasikan domain promer dan domain slave & instalasilah file file zona; bisa dilihat dengan menyetel opsi named_enable="YES"
    2. Catatan: Konfigurasi BIND disini dioperasikan sebagai root tanpa partisi pengamanan khusus. Situs http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/network-dns.html memberikan instruksi untuk menjalankan BIND dalam sebuah kondisi chroot, dan BIND mungkin juga dioperasikan dalam kondisi jail. Kedua opsi tersebut cukup melindungi BIND dari serangan, dan bisa anda pertimbangkan, tetapi tidak akan dijelaskan dalam uraian ini.

    Instalasi Port

    1. cd /usr/ports/lang/perl5.8 && make install && rehash && use.perl port && perl --version
    2. portupgrade -a && portversion |grep -v = # mencoba mengubah apa saja.
    3. portinstall analog cronolog curl docproj-nojadetex htmldoc lsof lynx-ssl minicom netatalk nmap nut procmail webmin apache2 squirrelmail p5-Mail-SpamAssassin drac imap-uw postfix && rehash # customized or perl-based
    4. cd /usr/local/etc && cp smb.conf.default smb.conf && vi smb.conf # disini pasword enkripsi diset enable, lalu melakukan disable terhadap local master, dan disable printer; Disini juga dituliskan  pembatasan akses dari IP seperti yang dituliskan dalam  firewall yang ada dalam file smb.conf, sehingga semua program terkontrol melalui file yang sama.
    5. echo "- -noddp -passwdminlen 6 -loginmaxfail 6 -uamlist uams_dhx.so" >> /usr/local/etc/afpd.conf
    6. cd /usr/local/etc/rc.d && patch netatalk.sh /root/reppep/netatalk.sh.diff # disable atalk, pap, & nbp
    7. mkdir -p /var/log/samba && cd /usr/local/etc/rc.d && cp netatalk.sh.sample netatalk.sh && cp samba.sh.sample samba.sh
    8. Konfigurasikan XFree86 (disini tidak akan dijelaskan lebih rinci) lihatlah situs http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/x-config.html.
    9. Sekali XFree86 bekerja, pasti anda ingin menginstalasi KDE secara otomatis pada saat boot, coba lakukan perintah berikut : echo 'ttyv9 "/usr/local/bin/kdm" xterm on secure' >> /etc/ttys, or use KDE with startx: echo exec startkde > ~/.xinitrc

    Mengkonfigurasi Mail

    1. cd /etc/mail && mv mailer.conf mailer.conf.sendmail && cp /root/reppep/mailer.conf .
    2. cd /usr/local/etc && cp /root/reppep/procmailrc . && vi procmailrc
    3. patch /etc/inetd.conf /root/reppep/inetd.conf.diff && patch /etc/pam.conf /root/reppep/pam.conf.diff # for imap-uw
    4. vi /usr/local/etc/mail/spamassassin/local.cf # customize SpamAssassin
    5. echo localhost > /usr/local/etc/dracd.host && /usr/local/etc/rc.d/dracd.sh start
    6. vi /etc/aliases && newaliases # forward for $myself & root
    7. Jika memakai Postfix Virtual Host, editlah dengan cara ketikan: vi /etc/mail/virtual && postmap /etc/mail/virtual
    8. cd /usr/local/etc/postfix && cat /root/reppep/main.cf.* >> main.cf && vi + /usr/local/etc/postfix/main.cf && postfix stop ; killall sendmail ; postfix check && postfix start && sleep 1 && tail /var/log/maillog
    9. cd /usr/ports/mail/imap-uw && make cert && chmod -x /usr/local/certs/imapd.pem # follow prompts
    10. Bila diinginkan port terpasang lakukan: portinstall -f mysql-server # -f to get around the hold in pkgtools.conf

    Mengkonfigurasi Apache & SquirrelMail

    9. Tambahkan plugin tambahan yang anda inginkan untuk SquirrelMail .

    webmin

    1. cd /usr/local/lib/webmin/ && ./setup.sh
    2. Visit https://$hostname:10000/
    3. Konfogurasi Webmin: IP Access Control: aturlah "Only allow from listed addresses" to 127.0.0.1 & trusted IPs.
    4. User Webmin: Buanglah semua modul yang tidak diperlukan.
    5. Bila  mysql-server terinstalasi didalam server anda, Konfigurasi webmin dilakukan dibawah: Servers.
    6. /usr/local/etc/rc.d/webmin.sh-dist stop # pakailah argumen  start nanti, untuk mengoperasikan webmin bila diperlukan.

    Setelah semua selesai, lakukan pengujian atas hasil kerja anda. Apabila ternyata ada kegagalan, ulangi langkah langkah diatas. Kegagalan adalah kesuksesan anda yang tertunda.

Kira-kira apa sih kelebihan satu OS dengan OS lainnya?. Hal itu secara singkat akan coba kita ulas pada tulisan ini.Windows, OS keluaran Microsoft yang hingga saat sekarang ini masih menguasai 80 % pasar IT di dunia. Perusahaan yang didirikan oleh Bill gates ini terus memperbaharui varian windows-nya(yang terkhir Windows Vista) dengan reseach yang dilakukan dengan sistematis oleh perusahaan, dan berbeda dengan Open Source linux, untuk mempelajari windows varian baru tidak perlu belajar dari awal lagi, karena ia hanya bersifat penyempurnaan saja. Jadi banyak item-item yang relatif sama, para pelaku bisnis tidak perlu bersusah payah membiasakan pengetahuan bawah sadarnya untuk mengoperasikan windows.

    Tapi karena selama ini windows dianggap sebagai barang mahal oleh orang Indonesia(untuk XP home edition saja mencapai 800.000), maka tidak heran jika selama ini banyak berkeliaran windows bajakannya. dengan instrumen Hak Intelektual, maka windows pun dikomersialkan. tapi sepengamatan kita, sebenarnya tidak ada masalah ketika kita menggunakan windows bajakan dalam hal kualitas. Yang membedakan hanya masalah registrasi dan tidak teregistrasi. jika telah teregistrasi maka jadilah windows tersebut asli. untuk mengganti windows bajakan dengan asli pun tidak harus di install ulang tapi cukup memasukkan Key code-nya saja. dan ini menurut membuktikan bahwa windows asli dengan bajakan tidaklah berbeda. Walaupun saat ini Microsoft sedang gencar melakukan kampanye pemakaian windows original, dan mengancam komputer pembajak dengan tampilan hitam, tapi sepengamatan di lapangan tidak satupun pengguna windows bajakan yang mengekuhkan hal ini. Malah hal yang paling mereka keluhkan adalah razia software bajakan oleh pihak kepolisian terutama oleh pelaku usaha.

    Kelebihan Windows selama ini terletak pada itemnya yang friendly karena banyak digunakan oleh para pengguna IT di seluruh dunia, sedari kecil sejak mengenal computer kita sudah dibiasakan dengan Windows, jika hang kita juga bisa dengan mudah memperbaikinya karena banyak ahli windows disekitar kita, di samping itu kita juga masih bisa sharing komputer dengan linux OS, windows juga mempunyai aplikasi yang lengkap walaupun banyak bagian yang harus dibeli terpisah. Menggunakan Windows saat menyelesaikan laporan-laporan kantor tentu sangat membantu.

    Lalu bagaimana dengan linux? linux sendiri adalah OS alternatif selain Windows. ia diciptakan oleh seorang pemakai OS bernama Linus Torvald pada 1988 yang merasa tidak puas terhadap apa yang telah dicapainya, hingga kemudian ia melemparkannya di internet dan tanpa diduga masyarakat banyak yang mem-browse-nya, hingga saat ini telah banyak varian linux yang biasa disebut oleh para komunitas Linux sebagai distro, bermunculan di khalayak.

    Kelebihan linux dibanding OS lain karena ia bersifat terbuka, tidak perlu bayar lisensi, kita juga bebas mengembangkannya lewat source code, Linux juga terkenal sebagai OS yang tidak rentan virus, bahkan ada yang sampai menjamin bahwa Linux kebal virus, operasi sistemnya pun terhitung ringan daripada Windows; ia bisa digunakan pada Intel 386 dan yang lebih tinggi, bandingkan dengan Windows yang hanya bisa digunakan pada prosesor x86. Ia cocok bagi mereka yang ingin belajar lebih banyak tentang OS.

    Lalu bagaimana dengan Macintosh? Macintosh selama ini mempunyai kelebihan dalam kinerja pembuatan desain, musik, dan film. Tidak bisa dibayangkan bagaimana ribetnya jika kita melakukan semua itu lewat Windows. Macintosh hingga saat ini memang lebih banyak menunjuk pada tiga hal tersebut. Tapi selain itu Mac juga dikenal sebagai OS yang eye catching, tidak terjadi hardware conflict karena sudah satu paket dengan Mac OS, ia juga tidak rentan virus. Internet servernya yang bernama Safari juga terkenal enak untuk digunakan ber-internet ria.

    Kelemahan-kelemahan mereka

    Kelemahan Windows selama ini adalah karena ia mudah diserang virus, hal ini wajar karena ia banyak digunakan oleh para IT User jadi banyak orang sudah mengerti tentang bahasa programnya. Ia juga tidak bisa dikembangkan secara mandiri dan harus menunggu Microsoft, tidak ada source code-nya, disamping itu pula ia dikenal sebagai OS yang mudah hang walau juga dikenal mudah untuk memperbaikinya, hardware conflict adakalanya terjadi pada Windows karena ia bisa di injekkan pada computer rakitan. Server internet-nya yang bernama Internet Explorer (IE) juga banyak dikeluhkan oleh para pemakai Internet.

    Adapun Linux, kelemahannya terletak pada sistem operasi yang masih belum banyak diketahui oleh masyarakat IT, jika terjadi masalah juga agak susah bagi pengguna awam karena ahli Linux pun terbatas, terutama di daerah-daerah di Indonesia. Kecuali kita punya komunitas yang bisa diajak share.

    Sedangkan Macintosh, keeksklusifan satu paketnya membuat kita harus mengeluarkan biaya banyak,padahal dirumah kita sudah memiliki computer misalnya tentu kita harus membeli computer lagi. Selain itu hampir sama dengan linux, untuk menggunakan Mac kita juga harus belajar ekstra karena banyak system pengoperasian yang tidak familiar bagi pengguna IT awam. (Ihsan Maulana)

    Hal penting yang saya pelajari (selain masalah teknis development dashboard dengan Interactive Reporting Studio) adalah deployment dashboard ke portal melalui plugin. Hal ini penting, karena menentukan langkah apa dan model desain yang kita butuhkan agar tepat dalam pemilihan plugin.

    Oleh karena itu, saya akan mencoba membuat sekedar perbandingan antara dua plug in yang ada untuk mensupport jalannya aplikasi Hyperion di portal.


    iHTML (intelligence Server)

    1. Light-weight, karena seluruh aplikasi dijalankan dari server. Client hanya meload halaman atau komponen yang dilihat oleh user. Sehingga memory yang dibutuhkan untuk menjalankan browser juga kecil.
    2. (Menurut forum di ittoolbox.com), fitur drill down masih dapat dijalankan. Tetapi menurut hasil testing saya, pada iHTML, chart atau pivot yang di embed ke dalam dashboard akan otomatis berubah menjadi image (untuk selanjutnya jika ada perubahan yang lebih valid, akan saya tulis ulang di blog ini).
    3. tidak membebani traffic jaringan, karena transfer data server-client hanya pada halaman yang diakses saja.
    4. tidak membutuhkan spek hardware yang tinggi (karena sifat lightweight nya)
    5. komponen JOOLE (komponen yang dapat mensupport generate file-file MS Office), didisable untuk alasan keamanan.


    Web Client

    1. Heavy-weight, karena seluruh aplikasi diload dari server ke computer client. Sehingga memory yang dibutuhkan untuk menjalankan browser juga sebesar aplikasi yang dijalankan.
    2. fitur drill down dapat dijalankan baik pada pivot ataupun chart.
    3. Kemungkinan membebani traffic jaringan (pada saat pertama kali loading di browser), tetapi kelebihannya, setelah loading selesai, maka akses lebih cepat.
    4. membutuhkan spek hardware yang tinggi (untuk aplikasi yang pernah saya publish, memiliki sekitar 10 query-result, membutuhkan free ram untuk menjalankan plug in di browser sebesar 250MB!!!)
    5. Mendukung komponen JOOLE (komponen yang dapat mensupport generate file-file MS Office).


    Jadi dengan pertimbangan di atas, developer bisa merencanakan terlebih dahulu, kira-kira plug in mana yang paling sesuai dengan kebutuhan. Jika dibutuhkan generate file-file MS Office (misal laporan dalam format word atau excel), maka Web Client pilihannya (meskipun konsekuensinya hardware requirement yang tinggi). Jika yang ditampilkan hanya tampilan saja (tanpa generate file), maka iHTML adalah pilihan terbaik.

So far I've finished Excel and I am now half way through Word 2007. Currently I am planning to finish PowerPoint, Publisher and Outlook before Christmas.

    I am learning these things for two reasons: 1st: we can’t get away from Microsoft Office…its everywhere! One way or the other, we have to use one / more Microsoft Office programs for our work; 2nd: I am offering some computer trainings in Oamaru, so it would be great if I know programs like Excel and Outlook because they are very popular in the business world; also...knowing a trick or two in these programs can certainly save you time later on.

    I was talking to a friend the other day and she told me that Office 2007 is not as good as Office 2003 because she have to go through the different tabs on the Ribbon to get what she wants :( In Office 2003, the functionality is just a click away, so why does she have to "increase her mouse clicks" in the new version? Well, what she said was quite true, so does that mean we should switch back to Office 2003?

    For example, if you want to use the Close function, you can:

    • A. Click on the Office Button; then click on the Close button.
    • B. Use keyboard shortcuts: Ctrl + W
    • C. <insert more methods here>

    Shortcut keys are not everyone’s cup of tea, and we can’t expect the users to remember them unless they use it all the time. Solution A is good, but that’s two clicks away. Since the Ribbon is grouping the functionalities into different categories, this means that most things won’t be just one click away from your finger tips. So does that mean we have to accept the facts and click on different tabs every time we want something that’s not in the Home tab? Well, not really unless you don’t like to use the Quick Access Toolbar. The Quick Access Toolbar is basically a customizable toolbar for the users to store their favorite shortcuts on. Let’s take a look at the Quick Access Toolbar and see what it can do for us.

    By default, the Quick Access Toolbar is located beside the Office Button:

    If you click on the downwards arrow, you will see a menu with some commands:

    Personally I’d like to put the Toolbar below the Ribbon so that it’s closest to my mouse when I needed it:

    This is where it will locate if you put it under the Ribbon:

    Since the toolbar is customizable, you can add more buttons / checkbox to it to make it more personalized. There are two ways to do this. We start with the “olden way” first. Right click on the Quick Access Toolbar and click on Customize Quick Access Toolbar:

    Now you should see the window below (minus the green & black square):

    If you have used Office before, you should be very familiar with this kind of method of doing things. Just click on the items on the left and click on the Add button to add item to the Quick Access Toolbar:

    I personally doesn't like to use this method because it takes time to go through all the options and find the ones you use. Here is the second and better way, and I will illustrate this with a few examples:

    I really like to use the Zoom to Page Width function, but I can’t get to it within one click, so putting the button onto the Quick Access Toolbar would certainly save my time! But how am I going to do that? Well, first of all, let’s find it on the Ribbon by clicking on the View tab; you will see the Page Width button in the Zoom group:

    To add it to the Quick Access Toolbar, all I have to do is right click on the button that you want to add, and click on the Add to Quick Access Toolbar.


    You should see the button appearing on the toolbar instantly:


    But how about checkboxes, can I add them too? Sure, why not? Just say you want to add the Ruler checkbox under View tab’s Show/Hide group:


    All you have to do is right click on the checkbox you want and click on Add to Quick Access Toolbar:


    As you can see, the checkbox is now on the toolbar:


    What about the items in the Office Button, can they be added to the toolbar too? Let’s give it a try! Sometimes I need to use the Save as PDF function, so having it on the toolbar would be great!  Now all I have to do is navigate / find the function that I need:


    Right click on it and click on Add to Quick Access Toolbar:


    It’s on the Quick Access Toolbar now!


    To delete the icons / checkboxes on the Quick Access Toolbar, just right click on the ones you no longer need and click on Remove from Quick Access Toolbar.

    As you can see, with the methods I've mentioned above, you can really customize your working environment to suite your needs; with the help of the Quick Access Toolbar, your most frequently used buttons will only be a click away :D
